چکیده

Abstract We describe a new, tiny species of Schindleria from reef lagoon in the Red Sea off coast Hurghada, Egypt. edentata , new species, belongs to short dorsal-fin type with dorsal and anal fins about equal length. is characterized by an elongated but relatively deep body (body depth at anal-fin origin 10.8% SL 4 th ray 10.9 % SL); fin originating just slightly anterior (predorsal-fin length 60.9% SL, pre-anal 64.8% stubby head steep frontal profile, snout (i.e., 23.1% length), large eye 27.7% head’s length); long pectoral radial plate (length 7.6% four ventral procurrent caudal-fin rays increasing posteriorly; last simple without additional spine and, although longest, not distinctly elongate; 15 rays; 13 base first positioned below third ray; upper lower jaws toothless; vivo translucent body; black; swim bladder capped melanophore blotch; no pigmentation externally on after preservation.

A new goby species, Speleogobius llorisi sp. nov. (Teleostei: Gobiidae) is described from the circalittoral sea bed at 46-69 m depth off the Balearic Islands, western Mediterranean. Six specimens, four females and two males, of the new species were collected from beam trawl samples carried out on the red algae beds off the south west coast of Mallorca Island. Among others, the main traits that ...

Lessons from the first dorsal fin in atheriniforms—A new mode of dorsal fin development and its phylogenetic implications

The median fins in extant actinopterygians are the product of millions of years of evolution. During this time, different developmental patterns for the dorsal and anal fins emerged leading to a high variation in median fin morphology and ontogeny. In this study, the development of anal and dorsal fins in atheriniforms is described and its consequences for the current phylogenetic hypothesis ar...

Two specimens of Valenciennea helsdingenii (Bleeker, 1858) were collected off Punnakayal coast, from Gulf of Mannar, southeast coast of India in November 2012. The morphometric and meristic characters of the recorded specimens are described and discussed. This is the first record of the species from the Indian waters that is a range extension of its known range within the Indian Ocean.
